KUCHING: The management of an international port in the People’s Republic of China has expressed its intention of strengthening bilateral trade relationship with Sarawak by proposing for Bintulu Port to become a ‘sister facility’ to its own Xiamen Port.

Sarawak Public Utilities Minister Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi disclosed this to thesundaypost, adding that Xiamen Port recognised Bintulu Port as a logistics hub in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines-East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).

“Xiamen Port has the intention to become the ‘sister port’ to Bintulu Port to further the bilateral trading tie between both sides,” said the assistant minister, who is currently on a nine-day official visit to China where he is visiting the key ports in Xiamen and Gungzhou.

In the delegation are Bintulu Port Authority general manager Dato Hamdan Hamid, Sadong Jaya assemblyman Aidel Lariwoo, Bintulu Port deputy chairman Dato Chew Kok Woh, consultant Dato Francis Wong and

others.

Bintulu Port is managed by Bintulu Port Sdn Bhd, while Bintulu Port Authority is the regulatory body that oversees the port’s operations.

According to Dr Rundi, the working visit to China is a platform and opportunity to share information and exchange technical knowledge on

efficient port management with China.
