KUCHING: Selangor dominated the opening day of the 18th Sukma swimming action with four gold, four silver and three bronze medals. Johor swimmers were also in fine form after ending the day with 3 gold.

Selangor’s Nadia Redza denied Sarawak’s only chance of a gold in the women’s 400m individual medley. She clocked 5:09.03 to beat Angela Chieng who finished in 5:12.50. Johor’s Ong Yong Qi took the bronze in 5:15.19. Angela’s silver was Sarawak’s only medal out of the eight events contested yesterday.

Four records were shattered.

Johor’s Wong Fu Kang broke the 20-year-old men’s 100m breaststroke record with a new time of 1:03.05. Teammate Tern Jian Han was also in record-setting mood with a time of 26.57sec in the men’s 50m backstroke.

The other two new records came in the women’s 50m backstroke (Selangor’s Caroline Chan in 30.34sec) and 100m breaststroke (FT’s Christine Loh in 1:12.32).

Another eight events will be completed at the Sarawak Aquatics Centre today starting at from 8.30am.
