SIBU: Sarawak men’s volleyball players moved a step closer in their quest for the gold medal after outwitting Sabah 3-0 (25-18, 25-12, 25-12) in the final group match at Sibu Volleyball Association Indoor Stadium here yesterday afternoon.

Captain Brandon Kiew, with his trademark service smash, formed a lethal combination with six footers Jackson Ting and Wong Jing Huei to captivate the crowd.

Earlier, they brushed aside Johore 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-17) the previous night.

From a total of three victories, including their initial 3-0 win over Terengganu, Sarawak amassed 10 points to top Group B.

The latest win went some way to put their only loss, the stunning 2-3 defeat to Penang, behind them.

Johore, finished second in the Group B with nine points, followed by Penang and Sabah, all advanced to the quarter-finals.

Tournament top seed Selangor topped Group A, followed by Pahang, Wilayah Perseketuan and Perak.

No. 2 seed Sarawak will meet Perak in the last eight on Tuesday at 8am.

“Our target in the group match is to top the group and we are satisfied with our players performance thus far. Hopefully, they can maintain their momentum and continue to out their best foot forward,” coach Philip Teo said.

Teo refused to speculate on the coming match except to say that “we will never be complacent and I will tell my boys to stay focused and go all out to win the match.”
