MIRI: It is vital for all seamen to adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOP) on safety while at sea.

Pelita Maslaut managing director Masni Amit stressed that all those involved in maritime activities and operations should be well-versed in the safety SOP.

“Safety requirements in any ship or vessel are not for show — they serve to facilitate those on board address any challenge, problem or obstacle while at sea. They also help to create a safe environment for the seafarers,” he said in officiating at the orientation for the 15th batch of participants undertaking the deck rating course at Pelita Maslaut Academy in Lutong yesterday.

The ceremony also saw 11 young trainees receiving their seamen bags.

Masni then told the trainees that to become well-equipped seamen, they must always prioritise on safety and survival whenever they were at sea.

“All seamen must have the skills and knowledge whenever they board a ship. They (skills and knowledge) will become their means for survival should any untoward incident or disaster occur. We at Pelita Maslaut Academy always stress the importance of the safety SOP, as well as the compliance with maritime regulations.”

Masni said strict adherence to the SOP would help minimise human errors and accidents on board vessels.

In this context, he called on the trainees to always remember the dos and don’ts on board ships or tankers to ensure that the human lives and cargoes would reach their destinations safely.
