KUCHING: SMK Green Road won the first ever inter-divisional competition for alchemists memory set held at SMK Batu Lintang here on July 14.

The competition was organised by the school in collaboration with the State Education Department and the Kuching District Education Office, under the initiative of the school’s Chemistry teacher Jennie Lau Ik Fei, who created the chemistry card game in 2008.

The competition received encouraging response from 100 students from 13 secondary schools in the Kuching, Samarahan and Serian Divisions.

The champion and first runner-up for the individual category went to Gabriel Ngu and Nicholas Lee from SMK Green Road, while the second runner-up was Tan Tai Heng from SMK Kuching High. The consolation winners were Nick Goh and Eunice Wong from SMK Kuching High and Davin Ngu from SMK Datuk Patinggi Haji Abdul Gapor.

For the team category, the champion for 2016 was SMK

Green Road, followed by SMK Kuching High (first runner-up), SM Lodge (second runner-up) and SMK Batu Lintang (consolation).

The competition at Kuching Division level was first held in 2014. This year is the first time it was held at inter-divisional level.

“The aim of the alchemists memory set is to entice students’ attention and motivation in learning and relating chemical reactions of carbon compounds and elevate students’ abilities to remember all the chemical reactions with ease with their peers,” said Lau.

“The competition of alchemists memory set was successfully implemented and hence I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jabatan Pendidikan

Negeri Sarawak and Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah Kuching

for their support, the school principal Puan Hajah Saftuyah

Haji Adenan for her encouragement, teachers and students who had participated as well as Alchemists Memory Set Club committee members to make the event a success,” she said.
