Clapam receives over RM106,800 for its charity project

MIRI: The Cleft Lips and Palates Association Malaysia (Clapam) yesterday received sponsorships from caring people for its charity repair surgery project.

Thirty-six companies, volunteers and individuals including Columbia Asia Sdn Bhd and Assistant Minister for Tourism Datuk Lee Kim Shin, handed over donations totalling RM106,860.93 to finance Clapam’s 17th charity project which is being carried out starting yesterday until July 31.

The donors are Columbia Asia Sdn Bhd (RM20,000); Datuk Lee Kim Shin (RM5,000); Truepeace Sdn Bhd (RM16,027.53); Jenny Wee (RM10,000); Suasana Mentari Engineering Services (SMES) Sdn Bhd, Brunei (RM5,000); Merbau Furniture Sdn Bhd – Hii Hien Tak (RM5,000); Aanchal Bhushan (RM5,000); Greg Stewart (RM6,170); Clare and Guillermo Rocco (RM4,500); Susan Meulemans (RM4,500); Georgios Samouilidis (RM4,500); Michael Lim (RM4,500); Donation Box (RM3,331.40); the Scottish Community-Miri (RM2,000); Tomling Projects Sdn Bhd (RM2,000); Outpost-Judith (RM1,050); Jenny S Richards (RM1,000); Malaysia Petroleum Women Association (PWPW) (RM1,000); Mairead (RM1,000); Annette Sheck (RM800) and Public donation (RM1,000).

Others include John Fabian and Helen Liu Lee Jin (RM800); Krokop Neighbourhood Watch Committee (RT) (RM600); Ferjus Jawi (RM500); Yang Guang Furniture (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd (RM500); Wong Chii Sing (RM500); Sia Wei Sing (RM400); Jong Nam Kiau (RM800); Michael Itam (RM200); Muhamad Fazleey Razalee (RM200); Canopy Cafe (RM192); Anonymous (RM150); Kingsley Yapp (RM100); Su Chew Ring (RM100); Lindsay (RM100) and Jim Tan Wea Jin (RM10).

Among those present to witness the mock cheque presentations at Columbia Asia Hospital – Miri (CAH-M) were its regional general manager Yeoh Kim Looi, consultant plastic surgeon from Pantai Hospital in Kuala Lumpur Dr Kim Tan, Dr Joseph Manavalan (also from Pantai Hospital in Kuala Lumpur), Dr Philip Raja (CAH-M’s paediatrician) and Dr Roland Dom Mattu (CAH-M’s obstetrician and gynaecologist).

In his brief speech, Dr Philip thanked all the donors and sponsors including the expatriates and those from neighbouring Brunei.

“Without the support from all donors and sponsors, we will not be able to implement the charity project and bring back smiles to those with cleft lips and palates,” he acknowledged.

Clapam is a non-profit, voluntary association of parents of children born with cleft lips and/or palates, adults with cleft lips and/or palate, and healthcare professionals who treat patients with cleft lip and palate or other craniofacial anomalies.

The national organisation is registered as a non-governmental organisation (NGO) which began in 1992. It officially registered with the Registrar of Societies (ROS) in 1993 in Kuala Lumpur.

In Miri, the Cleft Lips and Palates Charity Project started in 2004.

Clapam’s Sarawak branch is under a pro-tem committee with Dr Philip Raja as the chairman and Columbia Asia Hospital-Miri as the secretariat.
