Education director not empowered to approve project contracts

KOTA KINABALU: The State education director is empowered to manage the giving of education development project contracts, not the approval of it.

In clarifying this yesterday, State education director Maimunah Suhaibul stressed the often misconstrued director’s RM5 million empowerment is not merely an instant award.

“It has indeed been implemented. Projects below RM5 million are under the Education Department’s jurisdiction,” confirmed the director.

“We will do procurement by tender. Open tender, we will do a technical at the department and then submit it to PMS (Treasury Malaysia Sabah).

“You must understand that RM5 million director’s power is for tenders between RM500,000 and RM5 million, decisions will be made by the tender board in Sabah,” she emphasized, adding that RM5 million and above projects will be referred to the Education Ministry.

Maimunah said numerous tenders have been approved thus far, including those to fix schools damaged by fire and natural disasters in previous years.
