KUCHING: The number of road accidents recorded during Ops Selamat, held in conjunction with the recent Hari Raya celebration, is fewer than those recorded during the same period last year.

“There was a drop of 40 cases, or 5.4 per cent, in road accidents. Police recorded 725 cases during the operation, compared with 765 last year,” said state police chief Datuk Mazlan Mansor at a press conference yesterday.

In terms of fatality, he said there were 15 cases, but during the same period last year, there were 19 cases.

“The decrease in cases was due to the approaches and efforts taken by the police. We focused more on motorcyclists and pillion riders and also on hotspots.”

Meanwhile, during the press conference, Mazlan handed awards to three district police stations for their excellent performance in this year’s operation.

Sarikei police station came in first, Bintulu police station second and Julau police station third.
