KUCHING: Hammer thrower Jackson Wong Cheun Young recorded a new personal best of 50.82m to win gold on the first day of the Sukma XVIII athletics event today.

Sarawak managed a one-two finish with Wong Siew Hung capturing silver, after throwing 48.35m.

Eng Chun Hau of Perak took bronze with a record of 47.41m.

“I’m happy to win gold and recorded a new personal best, furthermore this being my last Sukma (Malaysia Games). My progress in this event is due to the strong support and encouragement given by my coach (Thomas Ling),” Wong told reporters after the event.

In the 2014 Sukma in Perlis, Wong managed 50m to win silver in the hammer throw event.
