KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police will only act if there is any element of a criminal nature in the report of the United States Department of Justice with regard to 1Malaysia Development Bhd, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

He said the police would not intervene in view of the fact that it is a civil lawsuit.

“We will wait and see the developments in this process. If there is need to follow up, we will do so,” he told reporters after the handing over of duties by police officers here yesterday.

The DOJ had recently filed civil lawsuits to seize assets said to have been acquired with money allegedly misappropriated from 1MDB, the government investment fund.

Asked about the proposed Bersih 5.0 gathering, Khalid said any assembly aimed at toppling Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak would not be allowed.

“The police will not allow any street gathering that proposes to call for the resignation of the Prime Minister,” he said.

At the event, Bukit Aman Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department Director Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani took over from retiring Datuk Seri Mortadza Nazarene as the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department Director, effective Aug 1.
