PUTRAJAYA: Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar will hold discussions with his Filipino counterpart on the kidnapping of Malaysians by terrorists from southern Philippines.

He said the talks would be held at the sidelines of the 36th Aseanpol Conference here yesterday.

Last Thursday, Khalid confirmed that five Malaysian sailors who went missing in the waters of Dent Haven, Tambisan, Sabah were kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group.

Khalid reminded tugboat operators in the waters off Sabah’s east coast to be vigilant and to constantly keep in contact with security forces.

“We have earlier called on boat operators in Lahad Datu and Semporna and explained the security risks they are facing. We have also arranged for them to contact security forces but unfortunately they failed to do so.

“So I am asking these operators to follow the advice of security forces and not to act at their own fancy and take the matter lightly. If they are bringing tourists for diving, just inform the police,” he said.

Touching on security in the Sabah east coast waters, Khalid said it was still under control and security forces were carrying out intelligence work along the borders in the area.

“We are stepping up security in Sabah, particularly in the east coast region so we are taking this conference as an opportunity to talk with our counterparts from the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand on security and exchange of intelligence and information between the three countries,” he said.
