KUCHING: Malaysians will soon be able to report in real-time any criminal incidents that occur in their presence via their smartphones to the Malaysian Royal Police (PDRM) Command Centre.

This was disclosed by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who revealed that the government will hold a ceremony on Aug 16 to launch this scheme with PDRM.

“There will be around five million Malaysians registered in this scheme with the police under the Blue Ocean Strategy.

“This will enable them to report in real time any incidents that occur right before their eyes through their smartphone and report straight to the PDRM Command Centre so that the information is immediately received by the police and they can take swift action,” he told reporters at a press conference after gracing the Home Ministry’s Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri celebration held at Dewan Majma here today (July 28).

Zahid, who is also Home Minister, was asked to comment on what steps the government was taking in view of the increasing number of shooting cases in the country with the latest being the Setapak shooting yesterday (July 27) where two gunmen opened fire at a car at a traffic light along Jalan Genting Klang near Stapak Central in Kuala Lumpur.

While he assured the safety level in the country was still at an optimum level, he also noted that the government and enforcement must be prepared at all times to handle incidents when it comes to the safety of the people.

“We also hope that the people will also cooperate with us to provide any information when they come across crime incidents.”
