Golden night of glory for Sarawak silat

KUCHING: It was a glorious night on Wednesday, as Sarawak bagged five gold medals and one bronze in the Artistic Silat event held at Kota Samarahan Indoor Stadium.

The rather unexpected Sarawak success came from Putri Reena Syazwiena Mohamad Sabri (women’s individual), Mohd Firdaus Rahmat (men’s individual), Muhammad Shahrul Ikmal Rahmat (men’s creative individual), Chisty Sherry and Farrah Hannis Ismail, Rita Langat (women’s regu) and the duo Nur Amali Jamali and Putri Reena Syazwien (women’s doubles) triumphed in their respective events.

Mohd Firdaus Rahmant (men’s individual) recorded an impressive 435 points to clinched the first gold medal by beating both Sabah’s Luqman Laji (428 pts) and Muhammad Khairul Shaddad Ardi (414).

The second gold came through Putri Reena Syazwiena (women’s individual) who collected 449 points, leaving behind both of her rivals Norshahirah Ratius (Selangor, 440 pts) and Wan Nur Shela Muntaha (Pahang, 431 pts), to take home the silver and bronze medals.

Another gold medallist was Muhamad Shahrul Ikmal Jefree (men’s creative individual) collected 251 points to dash the hopes for Kedah’s Afiqul Rashyed Osman (249 pts) and Mohamad Izzat Wahyuddin Wira (236 pts) who settled for silver and bronze.

In the women’s regu, Christy Sherry, Farrah Hannim and Rita Langat contributed the fourth gold medal by collecting 438 points when they upset Selangor’s regu of Farah Aida Mohd Fuad, Shasha Shamimi Radzuan and Nur Sarah Rosli (437 pts) who took silver.

Johor took home the bronze through Muharramah Muhammad Sukki, Nor Asma Aishah Md Yussof and Nurhamizah Abu (429 pts).

The duo of Nur Amali and Putri Reena secured Sarawak’s fifth gold to continue its dominance with 522 points when they dumped Pahang’s Nur Aiesyah Sulaini and Siti Khairiz Wanie Abdol Razak (522 pts) and FT’s Asyura Izzati Rusli and Nurhayati Faisham (502 pts).
