MIRI: The secretariat of the Sukma XVIII Games had to clear out members of the public and athletes from Miri City Stadium at around 3pm today (July 30) as a safety measure, after the air conditioning in the building broke down and started releasing fumes.

The first announcement called for those with children to evacuate the stadium.

However, as the fumes grew stronger, a second announcement was made urging everyone to go outside, including members of the press.

Following this, the sepak takraw match scheduled to commence at 3.30pm had to be delayed to 4pm.

Technicians took less than half an hour to repair the faulty air-conditioning.

The public as well as athletes were allowed back in at about 3.28pm.

Bomba personnel were also seen at the scene standing by as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, Miri Social Development and Urbanisation Officer, Ennie Lukong who was there during the incident said that it was caused by an air conditioning gas leak and was not hazardous to health.
