A fire sent huge columns of smoke into the air around the Petronas LNG Complex in Bintulu this morning (July 30), resulting in an evacuation of the facilities.
Photos circulating on WhatsApp chat groups depicted staff of the complex huddled together after the evacuation and onlookers observing billowing pillars of black and white smoke originating from one of the buildings within the complex.
A statement from Malaysia LNG Sdn Bhd’s Public Affairs Department explained that the fire came from one of the transformers in the complex, which started at about 9.40am.
“The fire was put out by internal resources at 10am and the All-Clear Alarm was sounded at 10:15am. There was no injury as a result of the incident.
“The LNG production is not affected. Our team is currently investigating the cause of the incident,” the statement read.
