KUCHING: Brooke Dockyard and Engineering Works Corporation has reached another milestone with the completion of the South Acis Satellite Platform (SA-SA) topside project.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem officiated at the ceremony to mark the project here yesterday. SA-SA Topside is scheduled for load-out this Aug 1, and sail-away to a location on Aug 6.

SA-SA is a separate satellite platform in the South Acis field located in Block SK311, approximately 17km from West Patricia in the depth of 35m, offshore Bintulu.

The topside facility consists of eight conductors and triple surface trees that will provide up to a maximum of 24 well slots, which comprise nine for oil producers, five for water injectors, one slot for a gas producer and nine spare for future wells. The total tonnage is said to be 1,091 metric tonnes.

Brooke Dockyard chairman Datuk Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg regarded the successful completion as a testimony of the corporation’s capabilities of undertaking marginal field projects under the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) segment.

“Having been involved in the oil and gas sector (O&G) for the past 20 years and being a seasoned player, we have been able to strengthen our versatility and capacity.

“We have been acknowledged as an efficient and competitive player in the sector, having successfully delivered 19 offshore modules, four living quarters and 14 offshore substructures with total tonnage of 34,697 metric tonnes. This is our proven record.”

According to Abdul Karim, Brooke Dockyard presently has 304 personnel – up to 99 per cent of them are Sarawakians.

Breaking the figure further, he said the corporation had 60 engineers, 15 quality assurance-quality control (QAQC) personnel and 110 skilled workers, while the remainder were the non-technical supporting group and general workers.

“For the past 20 years, Brooke Dockyard has been creating employment and training for the locals, as well as providing livelihood to at least 1,000 families.

“We have expanded our annual rated tonnage from 8,500 to 17,000 metric tonnes. We are equipped with facilities such as site offices, warehouse, workshops, fabrication table and load-out wharf.”

In this respect, Abdul Karim believed that the corporation would be able to undertake more projects from both the government and private sector, while remaining competitive in both O&G, and land-based and marine industries.

Moreover, he said Brooke Dockyard was also determined to be involved in the state’s infrastructure developments such as the Pan Borneo Highway project, adding that the corporation had constructed several bridges including Sungai Nyelong Bridge and Meradong Bridge.

Infrastructure Development and Transportation Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing, Assistant Minister for Land and Air Transportation and Safety Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Assistant Minister for River Transportation and Safety Liwan Lagang and Murphy Exploration and Production Company senior vice president Thomas J Mireles were present at the ceremony yesterday.
