KUCHING: Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) enforcement officers’ diligent monitoring paid off as they discovered 146 pieces of illegal belian hewn timber at Ulu Sg. Koyan near Belaga on Wednesday afternoon.

According to a press statement issued by SFC, the seized timber of different sizes amounted to 3.85 cubic metres.

“Our officers deployed at the Koyan One-Stop Compliance Centre (OSCC) were alerted of the illegal logging activity when they detected suspicious piles of belian hewn timber during their routine patrol on Monday. SFC Bintulu Regional Office, after being notified of the case, dispatched its team of enforcement officers to the location and together with their colleagues at OSCC Koyan, revisited the area to conduct further checks,” said a spokesperson in a press statement.

“Ground inspection revealed there were no official markings on all the hewn timber, confirming suspicions of illegal retrieval of the said forest produce.

A police report has been lodged at the Belaga Police Station. The case was handed over to relevant the authorities for further investigation and disposal.”
