KUCHING: The state government must give more attention to the development of Kuching in view of the changes in social structure.

Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said the mushrooming of new aspirations were becoming more powerful and could overwhelm any administration that were ill-prepared for change.

Launching Kuching Festival at MBKS Theatre here last night, Taib said Kuching had reached the point where the government would have to understand the demands for more coordinated efforts.

“It’s going to be more apparent in the behaviours of our young people. That is why we have to find ways to develop according to the demands of the people, particularly in terms of social activities,” he said at the colourful ceremony that was also meant to commemorate the 28th anniversary of Kuching City.

Taib noted that Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) had managed to get the society to participate in constructive ways even though the city was home to diverse races,

“I hope both councils will continue with this component of social transformation in order to make city life in Kuching more pleasant.”

For instance, he said, river activities like the regatta should include smaller activities that would interest water-sport enthusiasts.

“This is something we have to think about. Both Kuching South and Kuching North must be represented in bodies that are planning for this because they can be the first source to have the most up-to-date data to plan for better social and cultural activities.”

At the ceremony, Taib and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib, enjoyed performances from Kuching’s friendship cities South Korea, Japan and China.
