MIRI: Meaningful and Vitasse 1 emerged winners in the junior and senior categories of the SM Pei Min floorball competition held at the school recently.

Meaningful edged Flame and Rex 1 to second and third placings in the junior category in this second edition of the competition held at SM Pei Min indoor stadium, while in the senior category, Rider Chew finished second and Teachers’ Team, third.

A total of 14 teams, including the Teachers’ Team making its debut, participated. According to the organizer, floorball was introduced to SM Pei Min in 2014 through the collaboration with i-Systems College Miri and members of the Sarawak Floorball Fraternity.

It is regarded as a very safe sport with a low rate of injuries compared to many other dominant sports. It emphasizes clean play and safety, making it an apt sport in schools.

Floorball can be played in a regular gymnasium, sports centre or even on a basketball court, and is suitable for players of all ages. Being anon-contact sport, it suits players who shun excessive physical contact which can result in injury, said spokesman FarrelChoo.

The sport has been around in Malaysia for around 10 years, and Miri kick-started it in Sarawak in 2014. Presently, there are six learning institutions playing the sport which is sanctioned by the International Floorball Federation (IFF) and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). They are Miri including i-Systems College Miri, SMK Chung Hua Miri, SMK Columba Miri, SMK BaruMiri and Teachers Training Institute Sarawak Campus(IPGKS).
