KUCHING: Javelin thrower Jamal Nasir Zulkipli claimed the first gold for Sarawak in the 18th Malaysian Paralympic Games at Stadium Sarawak, Petra Jaya today.

Hailing from Kota Samarahan, Jamal recorded a throw of 18.26 metres in the 600GM F55/F56 men’s category to retain the gold he won in the same event during the 2014 Perlis edition of the games.

Silver went to Sabah’s Jatin Moginza who recorded a throw of 15.44 metres. Meanwhile, Jenson from Perak received bronze for his record of 14.28 metres.

“I feel really proud and happy to win the gold medal, the first one for Sarawak in this year’s games.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to my coach and team members who have been giving me guidance during my four years of involvement with the team prior to this competition,” said Jamal.

With tough competition from other states, the 35-year-old athlete did not expect to reigned supreme in his favorite event and win gold.

Jamal will also compete in another of his favorite events, the hammer throw on Aug 8.

Meanwhile, Sarawak also received a bronze medal during the first day of athletics through hammer thrower Stanley
Ngo after he recorded a throw of 7.81 metres in the 7.26kg F13 men’s category.

Gold went to Muhammad Al Hafiz Abu Hassa from Pulau Pinang with 8.82 metres, while silver was Johor’s Badrul Hisam Musa with 8.61 metres.
