KAPIT: Get information from a variety of sources, not just textbooks.

This advice to students came from deputy director of Yayasan Sarawak Education Development and Sponsorship, Ellen @ Manium Engkang.

The students and teachers were attending a reading and information literacy camp jointly organised by Yayasan Sarawak and Sarawak Education Department last Thursday.

The 4-day event from Aug 1 to 6 was held at Dewan Kejora of SMK Kapit 2 here.

“Don’t just read one textbook but use different sources of information like facebook, blog, whatsapp, wechat, internet, print and electronic media, handphone, computer and television. Everything is information so don’t have to go far,” Ellen said.

“What’s important is initiative, innovative and pro-active to read more for a competitive edge. If you can’t be a pencil to write something nice, then be a rubber to erase wrongdoing,” Ellen said when officiating at a closing cum prize-giving ceremony on the last day of camp.

He was pleased that 81 students and 27 teachers from 27 schools in Song, Belaga and Kapit had participated in the annual activity sponsored by Yayasan Sarawak.

Technology education senior assistant director Shirini Mastuara Mohd Zulkifli also spoke.

The facilitators for the camp were from IPG Tun Abdul Razak campus, Sarawak State Library and Yayasan Sarawak.

Among those present were SMK Kapit 2 principal Robin Sabai and Joseph Elo who is officer in charge of Technology Education at Kapit Education Office.
