MALAYSIAN shooter Jonathan Wong Guanjie failed to qualify for the finals of the men’s 10m air pistol event in the Rio Olympic Games at the Olympic Shooting Centre in Deodoro, about 44km from here on Saturday.

The 24-year-old university student failed to break his own national national record of 585 points set in last year’s national championships and recorded 574 points in the qualifying rounds.

He landed in 28th out of 46 shooters and was six points short of the qualifying mark of 580 points for the finals round.

Jonathan, a third year aerospace engineering student with Universiti Putra Malaysia, admitted that his average score was due to his nervousness in his Olympic debut and vows to do better in the 50m air pistol on Monday.

He said although the 50m air pistol is not his favourite event he hoped to improve his personal best of 556 points in that event.

“I am confident to do better and using this additional event to gain more exposure,” he said

Eight top shooters led by defending champion Jin Jongoh of South Korea moved into the finals when he amassed 584 points behind Chinese Pang Wei who recorded 590 points.

Jin Jongoh, who aims to become the first shooter in Olympic history to claim back-to-back gold medals in the event, also holds the world recond of 594 points set in 2009. — Bernama
