KUCHING: Wheelchair racer Anthony Martin broke the Malaysia Paralympiad Games record yesterday in the 100m T53/ T54 when he clocked 18.30secs for the gold medal at Stadium Sarawak.

He broke the previous Games record of 18.33s set by Mat Sani Kasbun at the 2012 Games in Pahang.

But A nt hony, a G ame s veteran since 1992, was a mite disappointed.

“One reason why I couldn’t register my best time (yesterday) was because of the soft track conditions at Stadium Sarawak.

On a better track, I believe that I can register my best timing for the state,” he said after receiving his gold medal.

His winning touch came from no lesser then Sarawak sprint legend Watson Nyambek — and supportive wife Felicia — who trained the 38-year-old Miri native.

It was however a sure gold bet for Sarawak as only three participants raced in the 100m T53/T54 category race and all were Sarawakians.

Aslin Melit took silver while Balang Besar took bronze.

Athletics contributed four gold, 11 silver and 17 bronze medals on the second day of the Malaysia Paralympiad Games (from Aug 6-10) hosted by Sarawak this year.

Sarawak’s other gold medals from Day 2 athletics came from Nur Athirah Voon (women’s 100m T11), Norhafida Rosli (women’s 100m T36/T38) and Richard Bada (men’s F40/ F41 shot put).
