REMBAU: The new party, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) will not be a threat to Umno but will actually have an effect on the opposition pact comprising Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), DAP and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah).

Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said it would have an effect especially on the votes obtained by the opposition in the coming general election.

“When Tan Sri Muhyiddin (Yassin – former deputy prime minister) said they were not banking on Umno members to join it, this means he is hoping for non-Umno members, and of course this will spilt up the opposition more when it is already split.

“So it is good to see when Muhyiddin and Tun Dr Mahathir (Mohamad – former prime minister) helping to split the opposition further,” he told reporters after visiting the Ladang Satelit Nasional Kg Semerbok in Kota, near here yesterday.

He was commenting on the application by Muhyiddin to register the party with the Registrar of Societies on Tuesday and to appoint Tun Dr Mahathir as party Chairman while Muhyiddin would be its president.
