KUCHING: Members of the public are urged to observe the closure of several roads in conjunction with the 2016 Kuching Marathon to be held in the city tomorrow.
Kuching District police chief ACP Abang Ahmad Abang Julai told a press conference yesterday that among the roads affected were Jalan Barrack, Jalan Gambier, Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg (UOB Bank), Main Bazaar, Jalan Wayang, Jalan McDougall, Ban Hock roundabout, Jalan Resevoir and the traffic lights near Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) office.
Closure of roads will start from 10pm today until 11am tomorrow.
“We strongly urge road users to observe any traffic directives and to give way to participants involved in the marathon,” added ACP Abang Ahmad.
Apart from that, Jalan Kulas, the stretch along Satok bridge and the road from Abang Kipali roundabout heading towards the city centre will be half-closed as well.
He also revealed that traffic police will collaborate with several agencies such as the police, army and the people’s volunteer corps (Rela) to monitor traffic flow.
He reminded the public who enter the city centre to park at several suggested car parks, among them the Saujana car park, Menara Pelita, Reservoir park, Parkson car park, Civic Centre and Taman Kereta.
Plaza Merdeka car park on the other hand is allocated for Marathon event staff and VIPs.
“Around 8,000 participants from across Malaysia and other countries are expected to participate in the annual event,” said Abang Ahmad.
Also present during the press conference was Kuching Marathon Association (KMA) secretary and 2016 Kuching Marathon event director Liew Tang Chieh and others.
