SIBU: Local entrepreneurs must equip themselves with the skills and knowledge that are in line with the advancement of technology in the era of globalisation.

National Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCCI) president Datuk Ter Leong Yap said the move would not only help them address the challenges ahead, but also improve their financial standing.

“We will help you on this. We will hold dialogues with relevant authorities on protecting members’ benefits and also improving the economy of our nation,” he said in his remarks at the 85th anniversary celebration of Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) in a hotel here recently.

On SCCCI, Ter said the body had achieved so much over the years, owing to the unity and cooperation of past and present industry leaders and members.

He was confident such spirit would continue going forward.

Ter was also optimistic on the future of entrepreneurship in the state, thanks to the healthy business environment and good governance under Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

Meanwhile event’s organising chairman Dr Hii Sui Cheng – also SCCCI treasurer – hailed the local chamber for its 85 years of continuous service to the Chinese business community here.

“SCCCI crossed that milestone on Aug 12. This celebration allows us to reminisce our past achievements and at the same time, to work together for our future.

“In commemorating this, we have decided to publish a souvenir book that relates our achievements throughout the 85 years, under different leaderships of different presidents.

“We also hold a ceremony to recognise the long service rendered by veteran members and set aside financial assistance to five independent schools,” Dr Hii said.

Sibu Municipal Council chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King, Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau, Consul-General of People’s Republic of China in Kuching Fu Jijun, SCCCI president Hu Yu Siong and prominent tycoon Tan Sri Tiong Su Kuok were among those present at the dinner event.
