Couple fined RM7,000 each for failure to pay employees’ wages

SIBU: A husband and wife who failed to pay their employees’ wages were each fined RM7,000 by the Magistrates’ Court here yesterday.

They pleaded guilty to a total of four charges of violating the National Wages Consultative Council Act.

Law Chang Ching, 31, and Jessica Ting, 26, who owned a pet shop in Ulu Sungai Merah each faced two charges under Section 43 of the National Wages Consultative Council Act 2011 which carries a fine of not more than RM10,000 for every employee.

The couple committed the first offence between October 2014 and February 2015.

They failed to pay salary due to Jenny Du, 22, which had been fixed at RM800 per month.

For this offence, Law and Ting were fined RM3,500 each in default of three days’ imprisonment.

The second offence concerned failing to pay salary which had been fixed at RM800 per month to Evelyn Ngie, 22, between February 2015 and April 2015 at the same pet shop.

The husband and wife pleaded guilty and were each fined RM3,500 in default of three days’ imprisonment.

In an unrelated case at the same court, 33-year-old Andy Mancha was sentenced to 30 days’ jail and fined RM2,500 in default of one month’s jail after he pleaded guilty to extortion.

He was charged under Section 384 of the Penal Code which carries an imprisonment term which may be extended to 10 years, or with a fine, or with whipping or with any two of such punishments.

Andy committed the offence on Aug 11 at a rented room in Hardin Road.

The accused had committed extortion and had snatched a handphone belonging to Abang Muhammad Zeffri, 31.

Based on police investigations, the victim also suffered punches to his face and head.
