BINTULU: A fire broke out at SK Long Busang in Belaga on Sunday, destroying a boys’ dormitory, and the pupils’ personal belongings.

Belaga police chief DSP Melay Tingom said no casualties were reported in the 3pm incident.

He added that teacher Periddie Achen, 48, told police he received a call from headmaster Tomat Ntau about the fire at around 6.30pm that day.

“The cause of the fire is believed to be due to a short circuit,” said Melay.

Meanwhile, Belaga District education officer Henry Usat Bit, when contacted, said all 64 pupils affected by the fire were safe.

“The school’s contingency plan is to put the Primary 6 pupils and boys from Long Unai at the old hostel.

“Those from Kampung Long Busang were asked to stay at their longhouse.”

Henry said Sarawak Hidro had been contacted to help those affected by the fire.

“Today (yesterday), teams from Belaga District Office, police and Education Office will go to the school to assess the situation.”

Minister of Welfare, Women and Community Wellbeing Datuk Fatimah Abdullah, when contacted, also expressed her concern over the incident.

Long Busang is located in the interior. Getting there requires a 90-minute drive from Belaga town to Bakun and another eight to nine hours by river.
