IPOH: The laboratory test result on the sample of water and kitchen utensils taken from the Malay College Kuala Kangsar, here, following the food poisoning suffered by 56 of its students, is expected to be completed in at least five days.

Perak Health Director Datuk Dr Juita Ghazalie said the sample was passed on to the bacteriology department of the Public Health Laboratory Ipoh, yesterday.

“For now, the cleaning of kitchen and dining hall of MCKK hostel is being carried out,” she said in a statement, here, yesterday.

Last Wednesday, the students who showed symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, fever, dizziness and abdominal pain after having their meals at the college’s dining hall were confirmed by the medical officers for food poisoning.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the van used to transport food from the kitchen to the dining hall was dirty, and so were the kitchen utensils, such as trays, jugs, water dispensers, bowls and plates.

Dr Juita said the students were now in healthy condition and could carry out their daily activities as usual.

Meanwhile, the Education Ministry in a statement said there were no new cases of food poisoning in MCKK reported.

“A briefing to all of the students has been carried out by the college and the hostel warden has been instructed to monitor the affected students who received treatments as outpatient,” it said.

Another company has been appointed to supply food to the college students during the time the kitchen is closed, it said.

“MCKK is monitoring the cleaning works on the dining hall carried out by contractor and the Health Department will carry out follow-up inspections tomorrow,” the statement added. — Bernama
