SHAH ALAM: Umno founding father Datuk Onn Jaafar did not go tarnishing Umno’s image after he decided to quit the party, an attitude that should be emulated by all, Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said.

In fact, he said Onn, who was also his grandfather, did not even make a fuss, let alone creating chaos by asking the people to go out on the street when he made the decision to quit Umno in 1951.

“He (Onn) did not tell us to run amok, he did not tell us to topple the prime minister, he did not tell us to destroy the government. He was a leader who had the values of sincerity and patience.

“Due to these two values, his grandson is able to be with you now.

“I have also witnessed how Datuk Onn’s mission became a reality in our approach in the Barisan Nasional (BN),” he said when opening the Kota Raja Umno delegates’ meeting here yesterday.

Also present were Selangor Umno Liaison Committee chairman Tan Sri Noh Omar, Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Irmohizam Ibrahim, as well as Kota Raja Umno chief Kamaruzzaman Johari and vice-chief Mohd Hamidi Abu Bakar.

Hishammuddin also called on Umno leaders at the grassroots level in Selangor to reach out to party members in a bid to win back the state in the next general election.

“Reach out to members who have yet to register as voters, members who reside outside their constituencies and members who did not cast their votes in the last general election,” he said, adding that all members should also set aside their personal interests and ego to ensure victory for the party. — Bernama
