SERDANG: Police are working with institutions of higher learning (IPTs) throughout the country to curb Daesh influence among the students.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim said there were pockets of students inclined to support such militant ideology.

“They’ve expressed their interest on their Facebook and other social sites by liking and sharing postings on Daesh militants.

“As such, we will focus on this group and give talks to prevent them from getting involved in Daesh militant activities,” he said.

He was speaking at a news conference after the 12th Passing-out Parade and Accreditation Ceremony for the Malaysian Public University Undergraduates Police Voluntary Corps (SUKSIS) at Universiti Putra Malaysia, here, yesterday.

Noor Rashid said the militant group was targeting youngsters for recruitment as they were easily influenced.

“The threat of Daesh is real and it is not only taking place in the country but all over the world, via Twitter, YouTube and other sites.

“Our youngest arrested is 16 years old and this is an issue we need to devote more attention.”

He said according to intelligence, Daesh militants were recruiting students with family and social problems.

Noor Rashid said cooperation with the respective State Religious Islamic Departments should also be stepped up as the Daesh group was using religious issues to get followers.

“They (militants) are twisting religious teachings and issues to influence others to join them and this matter should be highlighted,” he said.

At the ceremony, 1,020 SUKSIS Corps trainees from 19 public universities received their accreditations. — Bernama
