KUCHING: The major infrastructure projects in the works now are the Medan Jaya flyover in Medan, Bintulu, Batang Igan bridge and Rambungan Bridge in Lundu.

According to Public Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusuf, all three projects are still in the planning and consultation process with tenders to be issued soon.

“Other progressing projects will be the bridge in Matang Lee Ling, which is facing a slight delay but the contractors are now fast catching up,” he said.

“The Batu 15 Kuching-Serian road upgrade works on the other hand faced a complex issue as it needs a lot of relocation to utilities but once all the relocation has been done, I am sure the contractor will catch up.”

Fadillah gave this update on state infrastructure after attending the Giant Samariang Merdeka carnival here yesterday.

Later he added that the Batang Samarahan Bridge was progressing quite well after the land issue had been settled via ex gratia payment.

“Apart from that, Batang Sadong MP Nancy Shukri and Sadong Jaya assemblyman Aidel Lariwoo will place the last girder on the Batang Sadong Bridge tomorrow (today) to symbolise the completion of the bridge.

“I am confident that September will be the practical completion (deadline) for the bridge and it will be officiated by October,” he added.

Fadillah also said Samarahan pedestrian bridge will be an icon for Samarahan, being the first of its kind in the state which will be a landmark for motorists driving to Samarahan.

“It is expected to be officiated on Sept 13,” he said.

The Samariang Merdeka carnival yesterday saw events such as car and motorbike autoshow, Pokemon Go challenge, Bintang Kecil Giant and a colouring contest.

Also present was Early Childhood Education and Family Development Assistant Minister Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.
