KUCHING: A clarion call has rung out for local football fans to rally around the Sarawak team set to play their last three matches of the Super League season.

The appeal by Sarawak Football Fans Club (SFFC), the oldest fan club of the state team, also came as the Crocs are poised to fight a season ending battle to avoid relegation from the top-tier league.

Speaking to The Borneo Post yesterday, SFFC president Peter Moni Selat expressed confidence that the team have what it takes to remain in theSuper League for next year.

“As fans of the team, you cannot stop believing in your team because that is what fans are for. You support them when they are doing well and you definitely need to be there when they are not doing well too,” he said.

Apart from that, Peter wanted to make it known publicly that current head coach David Usop has their full backing.

Local Sarawakian coaching talents are hard to find, he said.

“We know that he will do his best to keep the Crocs in the top flight … I hope the team under his guidance will also give the fans a reason to look forward to next season as well,” Peter added.

Following a 1-1 home draw against Selangor at the Stadium Negeri last week, the Crocs must take advantage of the two remaining home games to get maximum points.

The Crocs are currently ninth in the league table with 18 points, above Terengganu (also 18 points), Penang and basement Pahang (14).

The bottom two teams will be relegated to the second-tier Premier League next season.

David said recently the two-week period before the next game will be crucial to get the team into shape as he tinkers with strategy and formation, especially in the attacking department.

Sarawak’s next Super League game is against Kelantan at home on Sept 10.
