MIRI: Malaysians must continue to live in peace and harmony and work together in safeguarding the sovereignty of this country.

“We have been living together peacefully for 53 years in this country. There is no two ways about it, we must live in peace and harmony,” said Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting yesterday.

Ting, who is also SUPP secretary-general made the call in conjunction with this year’s National Day celebration, with the state-level celebration centred in Sri Aman.

“August 31, 1957 is an Independence Day for Malaya, July 22, 1963 Sarawak Day and Sept 16, 1963 Malaysia Day.

“Malaysians must know the significance of these three important dates in Malaysia’s history.”

Ting acknowledged that this year’s National Day celebration was rather low-key in Sarawak “because many people who are knowledgeable of history say it has nothing to do with Sarawak’.

“This is true but we must nevertheless congratulate our Malayan counterparts for their independence.

“For us, as a part of the Federation of Malaysia formed on September 16, 1963, we should continue to enjoy the peace and harmony this country has to offer,” said Ting.

He reiterated that SUPP, together with the state government and other political parties in Sarawak would continue to fight and safeguard the rights of Sarawakians.
