Near-clean sweep for Sibu in CMS Sarawak squash Circuit

SIBU: Players from Sibu staged a near-clean sweep in the CMS Sarawak squash Circuit Sibu-leg which concluded here over the weekend.

In the Boys’ Under-19, Samuel Lau easily disposed of compatriot Lau Yi Cheng 3-0 (11-0, 11-0, 11-3) to lift the title. Third placing went to Kevin Yii.

The Girls’ Under-19 was also a tussle between Sibu teammates, ending with Joan Wong defeating Jamie Tiong 3-0 (11-5, 11-2, 11-5). Veronica Teo was third.

In the Boys’ Under-15, Sibu Caleb Lau emerged champion after beating Miri’s Wong Jun Ming 11-4, 11-9, 11-2. Kenneth Kong from Miri came third.

In the Girls’ Under-15, Sibu Carina Loi beat Miri Ivonne Chang Ying Jie 11-0, 11-2, 11-2 to win the title. Alicia Chin from Miri ended third.

Newly minted Sibu Squash Association president Tang Chok Ping said most of the seniors had opted out of the Sibu-leg competition due to commitments elsewhere.

Nevertheless, he was happy to note an increasing number of new players joining in the Sibu-leg, thus boosting the popularity of the sport.

Encouraging more people to take it up as a hobby, he said: “The racquets and balls are long lasting and the sport is also an indoor-activity for anytime of day.”
