PEKAN: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday emphasised that he was not afraid to face attacks from the enemy or give up the struggle for the people despite the endless attacks from within and outside the country.
He said his struggles were ‘driven’ by the spirit of togetherness, solidarity and support that he received from everyone, particularly from the Pekan parliamentary constituency which has been his political base since joining politics.
“Armed with the spirit, we will rise again. (I will) certainly fight. I am afraid of no one, I only fear Allah S.W.T. I am not afraid of people who betray Umno after becoming a leader for 22 years.
“Should I be afraid of people who is already 92 years old? We don’t have to talk much about people who have veered a lot. InsyaAllah we can achieve victory due to our spirit of togetherness,” he said.
Najib disclosed this in his speech when winding up the debate at the Pekan Umno division delegates conference at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Convention Hall, here yesterday.
He added that his fighting spirit had never faded despite having faced a dark patch during the 10th general election in 1999 when he won with a majority of only 241 votes.
“Many had asked me to move to another area because they said Pekan was no longer safe for me, but I turned down the suggestions to move because I was determined. I started in Pekan and my political career will end in Pekan,” he said.
In this regard, Najib, who is also the Pekan Umno division head, urged all the 148 Umno branches in Pekan to struggle with him to obtain a majority of more than 40,000 votes in the next general election to give a ‘most solid answer’ to those who attacked him.
He also reminded the delegates to always look after their grassroots and not to fight among themselves and to always resolve the internal problems with tolerance.
“I have to look after a larger court. I have to go here and there. I have to manage national issues which are becoming more and more complex including the wider external dimension.
“Don’t give me a headache nor raise any issue that can give a negative perception on the Pekan division,” he said.
Najib, who is also the Finance Minister, at the same time pledged to look for additional funds for the 2017 Budget to implement more rural development to ease the burden borne by the villagers.
“We will try creative methods to increase the allocation because we are aware of the difficulty they are facing. They are also the ones who are willing to live and die with Umno.
“We have to look after the villagers because they are the ones who are our strong supporters each year, and have never surrendered to Umno’s political enemies, and because of them Umno is still able to stand up tall until today,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) machinery throughout the country have been asked to make preparations to face the new work style to win the 14th general election (GE14).
“We will issue work instructions unlike in the past, our operations will use better methods that are organised and using more dynamic technology.
“If something produces better results, we will use it because politics is dynamic and if we use the old method, we will lose, but we use the new methods, we will move forward and can beat all enemies,” Najib said. — Bernama
