Dance festival to feature a host of exciting activities

SIBU: The 5th Sibu International Dance Festival (SIDF) will be held here from Sept 9 to 13, featuring dance performances, seminar, workshop, outdoor site-specific shows and outdoor drawing competition.

“It is a mutual learning dance event. The performances include classical ballet, modern ballet, traditional dance, modern dance, street dance and contemporary avant-garde dance, which will be an eye-opener for the local audience,” SIDF director Chen Ing Kuan told reporters here recently.

Teams expected to arrive today include Liquid Skin from Australia, PathumThani–Nantha Muni Bamrung Dance Group (Thailand), Martina Feiertag (Germany), Loka Art Studio (Indonesia), and Nrutya Naad (Mauritius).

Most other teams will arrive here tomorrow.

It was highlighted that due to the first time participation of teams from Spain and Germany, the Spanish Ambassador, Meritxell Parayre Sabés, will be coming to the dance festival together with the CEO of Goethe-Institut Malaysia, Rolf Stehle.

Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) deputy chairperson Rogayah Jamain will officiate at the SIDF opening cum welcoming night on Sept 9 at 8pm.

Twenty teams will take turns to perform every night. Their performances will include national and international award-winning dance pieces. Meanwhile, the dance seminar will be at RH Hotel from Sept 10 to 11 (9.30am to 11.30am) while the dance workshop is also held at the same venue from Sept 10 to 12 (2pm to 4pm).

There will also be a three-night concert at the Sibu Civic Centre, from Sept 10 to 12 (7.30pm to 10pm).

The outdoor site-specific performance and outdoor drawing competition will be held at Ku Tien Memorial Park, Sibu on Sept 13 (5pm to 7pm). It will culminate with a farewell party at the Ark on the same night at 8pm.

The festival organiser has installed a full set of lighting and sound equipment at the dance concert venue besides elevating the back seats in the auditorium for the audience to fully appreciate the performances. Hence, only 1,000 tickets are available per night.
