SARIKEI: Over 40,000 people are expected to participate in various events at the divisional-level National Sports Day 2016 (HSN 2016) to be held on the second Saturday of the month of October.

The organising committee revealed during a meeting chaired by Sarikei Resident Dr Anthony Valentine Laiseh yesterday morning that some 16,000 were expected to take part in the Sarikei leg hosting the divisional, district, schools and Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) level events.

Over 1,000 participants are expected in an aerobic exercise, Zumbathon, 10,000-step run for health and other activities to launch the divisional-level HSN 2016.

About 10,000 students from five secondary schools and 44 primary schools in Sarikei district are expected to take part in sports competition and other events organised in all schools on Oct 7; and about 5,000 members from 40 JKKKs are taking part in events held in longhouses or villages.

Bintangor and Julau which hosted the Sarikei and Julau Parliamentary-level event apart from the school and district level events expected over 3,000 participants each at the launch on Oct 8 morning; and about 8,000 at school and JKKK level event on Oct 7.

Pakan, which only hosted the district, schools and JKKK-level events, expected 500 participants at the launch on Oct 8; 3,000 at school-level; and 4,800 at JKKK-level activities on Oct 7.

Venues for the launching ceremony are the open space in front of Sarikei Civic Centre, Meradong Community Hall, Pakan Town Square (Laman Pakan) and SMK Julau 2.

Repok Assemblyman Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii is to officiate at the launch of the Sarikei divisional-level leg of HSN 2016.

He will flag off 50 to 60 cyclists in a 40-km ‘ Fit Ride’ to Bintangor and back.

In conjunction with the event, the Divisional Health Office will provide free eye-screening to the public from 8am to 5pm on Oct 7 and 8.

Among those attending yesterday’s meeting were Deputy Resident (Social) Lim Hock Meng, district police chief Supt Mat Jusoh Muhamad, Divisional Youth and Sports Officer Johari Abdullah, and heads and representatives from various government departments.
