Soniia Cheah clinches first international title

KUALA LUMPUR: National women’s singles shuttler, Soniia Cheah has finally clinched her first international title.

It came at the Belgian International Challenge Badminton Championship in Leuven, Belgium, on Saturday.

The 23-year-old who won a silver in the doubles at the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games, pulled off an upset by defeating eighth seeded Sofie Holmboe Dahl of Denmark in the final; winning in 21-11, 16-21 and 21-16, according to the tournament’s website;www.belgian-international.be.

Cheah’s next tournament is the Polish International Challenge to be held from Sept 22-25 where she is slated to meet Dorotea Sutara of Croatia in the opening match.

Compatriot Goh Giap Chin had lost to the eventual winner, Lucas Corvee of France, in the semifinals of the men’s singles also on Saturday. — Bernama
