MIRI: The local people are looking forward to the implementation of rural transformation programme projects in Batu Niah and Niah to create more economic activities for the people.

The area’s community leader Penghulu Haw Min Wai is one of them who likes to see more development projects being implemented in the two towns.

“I was happy to hear that Subis District Council is going to implement three projects in the two towns, which will cost millions of ringgit.

“These include the construction of a two-storey new Batu Niah Market, Niah Waterfront and an extension of a community hall in Sepupok,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Haw said the construction of the new market would replace the existing ‘open concept’ market in Batu Niah.

“Once completed the new market will have its ground floor used to sell vegetables, livestock, marine products and other grocery items. The top floor is designated as an eatery.

“The new market will attract even more people from nearby areas to Batu Niah, particularly on weekends.

“With more people visiting the town, more economic activities will be created and with it more income for the people of Batu Niah which is famous for its Niah National Park and bird nest products.”

The Niah Waterfront project, he added, would help to beautify the town area for the tourists to enjoy.

Niah is also a popular site for river prawn fishing among the local fishing enthusiasts.

On the extension of the Sepupok Niah community hall, Haw said it would be able to accommodate at least 500 people at any one time compared to only 300 now.

The hall would also be installed with air conditioning system to make it more comfortable for those attending functions there.
