Abg Johari: Review Co-operative Societies Act to meet current needs

KUCHING: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg has called for a review of the Co-operative Societies Act 1993 to meet current needs.

He said under the present Act, co-operatives would have to get a consensus from all parties concerned in order to implement all proposed projects. No project would get carried out if a single dissenting vote was registered during a meeting, he pointed out.

“The time is ripe to review our Co-operative Act so that if the majority agree to a project, the co-operative can go ahead with it. Sometimes, a minority objection serves as a hindrance to project implementation: when that happens, it is a loss of time and money,” he said before handing over keys to nine home buyers of Taman Desa Anib during a ceremony here yesterday.

The new residential project, which comprised 56 units of detached houses in Pasir Pandak, was developed by Koperasi Anib Berhad.

Abang Johari, who is also Housing and Urbanisation Minister, stressed that outdated laws must either be repealed or reviewed from time to time.

“We must look for ways to overcome obstacles and solve problems to pave the way for more development.” He cautioned that remaining stagnant would have a negative impact on the society and the community at large.

Earlier, organising chairman Dr Wan Ali Tuanku Madhi said all the 56 detached houses each cost below RM399,000.

As of yesterday, 30 units had been sold. This was the second housing project undertaken by Koperasi Anib Berhad.
