10 suspected human trafficking victims rescued

SUNGAI PETANI: The police have rescued 10 Indonesian women, believed to be victims of human trafficking, in an operation at a house in Taman Intan near here on Saturday night.

Kuala Muda police chief ACP Md Zukir Md Isa said the victims, aged between 20 and 50, who had their travel passes, were forced to work as cleaners.

A 51-year-old woman, who claimed to be the owner of the house, was detained in the 9.45pm raid, carried out based on public tip-off.

“At the time of the raid, two women, aged 20 and 22, were cleaning the birds’ nests in the living room. The rest were found sitting at the back room,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

Md Zukir said the suspect would be remanded for five days starting today and the case would be investigated under Section 12 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007. — Bernama
