MIRI: A total of 150 people will benefit from a charity programme run by the Miri Malay Welfare Trust Board (LAKMM) this year.

According to LAKMM executive secretary Jamil Bujang, its ‘Sentuhan Kasih’ project is the continuation from one of its activities held during the month of Ramadan.

“The programme has been receiving strong support from those in the private sector, associations and also individuals. As such, we would like to thank these generous donors who have been supporting ‘Sentuhan Kasih’ fully, and also helping us achieve and realise the programme’s objectives,” he told The Borneo Post at the presentation of contribution under LAKMM’s ‘Sentuhan Kasih’ at Kampung Bakam community hall near here yesterday.

Jamil said the board had been running a similar charity programme over the past two years, but the target recipients were needy pupils from five local primary schools that it had ‘adopted’ – SK Anchi, SK Sayed Othman, SK Kampung Pulau Melayu, SK Agama and SK Pulau Melayu.

“This year, ‘Sentuhan Kasih’ focuses on helping the disabled, senior citizens who are without any relatives or unable to fend for themselves, single mothers and the hardcore poor from selected villages. We are distributing essential items to them such as rice, flour, sugar, oil and cordial beverage,” he said, adding that the distribution for this year began at Kampung Pujut Tanjung Batu on June 18, followed by those at Sekolah Agama Rakyat Miri, Kampung Pulau Melayu, Kampung Pasir Lutong, Pujut 1 and 7 housing estate and Piasau Utara, before it concluded at Kampung Bakam where it involved more than 20 recipients.

Sibuti MP Ahmad Lai Bujang, who witnessed the presentation yesterday, lauded LAKMM for its role in helping the government address the welfare and wellbeing of the needy here.

“Thus, I hope others would emulate LAKMM and it doesn’t need to be solely about financial support. We can also motivate them (the needy) and uplift their spirits that would help them improve their lives,” the parliamentarian said.

Political secretary to chief minister Julani Mokhtar, Penghulu Adam Bujang and LAKMM members Temenggong Abdul Rahman Fadzil and Khatijah Datuk Muip were also present.
