Assistant minister escapes unhurt in accident

TUARAN: A 22-year-old woman seriously injured her head in an accident involving three vehicles, including that of a Toyota Land Cruiser carrying Assistant Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Masiung Banah yesterday.

The 9.30am incident took place at Jalan Berungis-Tenghilan here, near Marabahau Spur, as the assistant minister and three members of his entourage were on their way to the Youth Day ceremony which was officiated by Federal Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Khairy Jamaluddin in Kota Belud.

Lily Tang Yien Ping, 22, was sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where she was warded.

Tuaran police chief  Deputy Superintendent Abdul Fuad Abdul Malek said that the Perodua Axia driven by Tang was believed to have made a sudden exit out of a junction and clashed with the Land Cruiser and a Perodua Kancil whose 64-year-driver esaped unhurt.

Masiung and his entourage members were not hurt in the incident which is being investigated under Section 43 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

In Tambunan, a motorcyclist was killed and his pillion rider sustained serious injuries when their motorcycle skidded at the road junction of Kampung Sunsuron yesterday.

Acting Keningau police chief ASP Lee Nyuk Kim said Edwald Paul, 21, died at the scene while his 17-year-old friend was seriously injuried in the 6.20am incident. Both were reportedly students.

“Investigation at the scene found that the accident had occurred when the motorcycle skidded and hit an electric pole at the side of the road. The motorcyclist and his pillion rider were reportedly on their way to a friend’s house. Both of them were not wearing helmet,” he said.
