SIBU: The Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) should focus on improving and upgrading public facilities in Selangau before implementing a parking-fee system there.

Otherwise, the people would complain why they had to pay for parking when the facilities were poor, said Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang.

“I hope SRDC can also beautify the waterfront at Selangau bazaar, and transform this sleepy township into something livelier,” he said at the ‘Community Development Programme: Culture, Arts and Sports’ conducted by SRDC at SK Saint Matthew in Nanga Sekuau yesterday.

“The council should also build public toilets in those places. That is your duty as the local authority.”

Gira said he believed that SRDC had a master plan to develop Selangau.

“The government will support whatever good development plans SRDC has for the area.”

Saying he welcomed any suggestion to make Tamin or Selangau a better place, Gira also suggested that SRDC provide a proper trading place for street hawkers at Selangau and Stapang.

On another matter, he said he would look into SK Saint Matthew headmaster Mawang Nili’s request to build a new hall for the school.

Also present at the event were SRDC chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai, his deputy Robert Lau Hui Yew and organising chairman Kusa Buan.
