BANGI: Sustainability through good governance will guarantee institutions, especially the regulatory and enforcement agencies, function in accordance with the objectives of their establishments, based on standards, regulations and the law.

The Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Ibni Tuanku Munawir said that when members of an institution had integrity and high character, they would be able to guide and establish a system of good governance of the institution.

He said private institutions too were not free from the responsibilities of good governance as they were part of the network that make up a nation.

“This can directly curb the deterioration of values and standards in an institution to ensure that they remain strong and dynamic according to current needs and situation,” he said at the Chancellor Tuanku Muhriz Lecture at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), here yesterday.

The annual lecture, which was held for the first time, was delivered by former Bank Negara Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz with the title “Building Sustainable Institutions: Good Governance Matters”.

Also present was Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

On the annual lecture, Tuanku Muhriz said it was aimed at becoming the apex for scholarliness via scholarly discourses which could give effective solutions to various issues.

It was hoped that the lecture series would continue to enrich the various corpus of knowledge for a significant and positive benefit to society through a broad partnership by leaders and renowned scholars, he said. — Bernama
