MIRI: More than 9,000 diabetics are registered with Miri Polyclinic as of last August and over 88 per cent of them receive regular treatment.

Most of the patients are aged between 40 and 60, while the youngest is 18 years old.

“This is a worrying trend that is happening now in our society and therefore, there is a need to promote the awareness to the community,” family medicine specialist Dr Norita Yasmin told a press conference for World Diabetes Day yesterday.

She pointed out that it is vital for the public to take steps to prevent themselves from becoming diabetic.

“Prevention is always better than cure and taking better care of our health through exercise and a balanced diet,” she said.

Meanwhile, World Diabetes Day will be commemorated on Nov 12-13 at Bintang Megamall.

Malaysia Diabetes Association chair Ting Chiew Mei said there will be a seminar on how diabetics can care for their feet and eyes, as well as talks by certified dietitians on a good and balanced diet.

“There will be free screening tests, which members of the public can participate as well as visit informative booths set up by public and private agencies,” said Ting.
