Sabahan charged with violating Money Lenders’ Act

SIBU: A 27-year-old Sabahan indicted on two charges of violating the Money Lenders’ Act yesterday was released on bail pending further mention of the case.

Subordinate Court Registrar Romme Ahmad Zaidi released the accused identified only as Leow on RM8,000 bail in two sureties for each of the charges.

As bail condition, he ordered a sum of RM5,000 to be deposited in the form of fixed bank deposit certificate with the court for each of the charge. The case will  be further mentioned in the Sessions Court on Oct 18.

Leow is charged with lending RM3,750 to Wong without a valid moneylending licence at Jalan Ling Kai Cheng in early June.

He faces another charge of lending RM750 to Marrianeri without a valid licence at Jalan Sukun in early August.

Both charges were framed under Section 5(2) of the Money Lenders’ Act 1951 which provide for a fine between RM250,000 and RM1 million or five years’ jail or both, and liable to whipping.
