China divers sweep Day 1 with two gold

KUCHING: China stamped their supremacy at the Fina World Diving Grand Prix at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre in Petra Jaya yesterday, by sweeping both gold medals at stake on the first day of competition.

In the men’s 3m springboard final, Xie Siyi of China collected 479.15 points to finish in first place and Peng Jianfeng made it a one-two finish for China with 421.45 points.

In third place was Kevin Chavez of Australia who posted 397.65 points. Malaysia’s Chew Yi Wei finished fifth with 371.60 points

In the women’s 10m platform final, Lian Jie of China scored 302.65 points to win the gold medal.

Her compatriot Xia Bingqing took silver (298.25 pts) for another one-two China finish while Malaysia’s Loh Zhiayi won the bronze (285.55 pts).

In fourth to sixth positions were Taneka Kovchenko of Australia (267.60), Delaney Schnell of US (258.45) and her compatriot Tarrin Gilliano (248.30).

Four more gold medals are on offer today in the women’s 3m springboard and 10m platform synchro as well as men’s 3m springboard synchro and 10m platform synchro.

On the final day are the men’s 10m platform preliminary round, women’s 3m springboard synchro, men’s 10m platform and final of the men’s 10m platform.

Eight legs of the Fina World Grand Prix are organised by Fina this year.

The programme started with the first leg in Madrid (Spain) from Jan 15-17, followed by Rostock (Germany) from Jan 29-30, San Juan (Puerto Rico) from March 31-April 3, Gatineau (Canada) from April 7-10, Madrid (Spain) from June 26-28 and Bolzano (Italy) from July 15-17. From Kuching, Malaysia, the Grand Prix will move to Gold Coast (US) from Oct 27-30 and ends in Singapore from Nov 4-6. — by Ting Tieng Hee
