PENAMPANG: SM St Michael Penampang earned a spot in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) by producing 11,351 bookmarks made of recycled materials, exceeding its target of 5,000.

The achievement was made possible with the participation of 1,000 students and teachers, who managed to complete the project in just five hours.

Penampang Umno division chief Datuk John Ambrose said  the success of the school in the MBOR project showed the commitment of the teachers to educate students on the importance of environmental awareness.

“Once students are given that exposure, they will surely have more appreciation for the environment.

“This project not only succeeded because of the school, but also as a result of the support from parents.

“This initiative is definitely a positive development that is necessary for the benefit of all,” he said in his opening address at the Malaysia Book of Records: Mass Production of Bookmarks Made of Recycled Materials 2016 event here yesterday.

John hoped that the school will become an agent of awareness to the community as a whole, to fight for the cleanliness of this world.

Meanwhile, SM St Michael principal Jennifer Asing said the success of producing the bookmarks underlined the effort and commitment of the school in environmental responsibility.

“All the bookmarks made today will be distributed to feeder schools around Sabah. With the involvement of so many students in this project, I hope that it will raise awareness on the importance of preservation and ways in which we can care for the environment, and especially to avoid disposing of used goods in a way that can cause pollution,” she said.

According to Jennifer, the project also fosters creativity and healthy competition amongst students, aside from educating them on the environment.

During the event, John also announced that he would be donating RM3,000 to the school as a token for their achievement.

Also present were chief operating officer of MBOR, Christopher Wong and SM St Michael parents-teachers association chairman Datuk Philip Lasimbang.
